AboutKap
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an approach to therapy used to treat mental health issues including PTSD, depression and anxiety.
Ketamine has different effects at different doses. In low doses, ketamine supports psychotherapy by temporarily softening the psychological defenses. This in turn can reveal previously hidden struggles, emotions and histories, making the nature of our challenges more visible and the patterns easier to understand and change. In moderate to high doses, ketamine has psychedelic effects that can contribute to profound transpersonal experiences. Transpersonal experiences can create space for new insight, meaning, clarity and sense of interconnectedness.
KAP can create an opportunity to slow down, focus inward, and reshape the neural network in positive ways.

Testimonials are privately disclosed to honor client confidentiality
‘I’ve never met anyone who is so clearly doing their calling. Meg has the most natural and playful way of engaging this work. She put me completely at ease (not an easy feat given my anxiety). I had never worked with psychedelics before and had A LOT of questions. Meg patiently met with me, answered all of my questions, and always gently guided me back to myself and my body. I felt so safe. Her love of this work creates a warm atmosphere and presence that is a potent medicine in itself.’
‘My deepest appreciation goes to Meg for giving me my life back, for introducing me to myself and for now being able to live as the best version of myself that those who are most important to me, deserve. If you’re struggling as I was, I encourage you to find a way to do this. To desperately commit to all the things that are a part of KAP and psychedelic integration. You may just save yourself. You may just find yourself.’
‘Meg brings her whole self to this work. She’s given me permission to be a messy human who leads by example. I love her meditations, stories, her book recommendations and best of all- the real talk.’
‘I think everyone could benefit from this type of inner work’ (KAP & Psychedelic Integration client)
‘Thank you for traveling with me. Exploring my subconscious felt daunting and at other times blissful, but you have been there with me through it all and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to express how much it has meant to me. I know the journey isn’t over but it means the world to me to know that I’m not alone.’
‘Working with Meg helped me to revitalize my life. As someone with religious trauma I appreciated her use of spirituality and philosophy to help me clarify and energize my values (the secret ingredient I had been missing). After working with Meg I feel confident in the vision I have for my life and am unafraid to ‘GET AFTER IT!’
‘I found Meg after a unfortunate and traumatic psychedelic journey where I was left feeling hopeless and stuck. Meg helped me gain personal understanding of what had happened and find the hidden blessings within the trip using art therapy. She also introduced me to harm reduction and boundary work which has led to greater safety in every area of life. Most importantly I learned how to INTEGRATE the very important wisdom gained from plant medicines.’
‘KAP was a game changer. Working with Meg was the first time I’ve felt truly safe in my life. I truly appreciate our time and experiences together. I feel more understanding and acceptance around my trauma and more prepared for life's challenges.’
Heal yourself with beautiful love, and always remember: You are the medicine.

GETTING STARTED WITH
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy
Each step of the process has been outlined below. The number and frequency of sessions is customized based on your needs, and the insights you gain from each step of the process will inform the steps that follow. The work in preparation facilitates an open, curious mindset in a safe and supportive environment, commonly referred to as “set and setting.” The integration work takes advantage of the neuroplastic window to maximize the benefits of ketamine and support personal discovery, growth, and lasting change. I believe that psychedelic preparation and integration are fundamental to designing meaningful journeys. To find a more in-depth description of what this process look like, visit my integration page.
I. Consultation
Book a 20 minute free discovery call with me, no strings attached.
If after the call it’s determined that KAP may be a good fit for you and you’d like to proceed, we can schedule the next step: a initial 60 minute intake appointment. In the intake we will go deeper into your story and gather important background information.
II. Intake
After intake you will be referred to my in-house medical team at Journey Clinical. Journey will provide you with a full health and safety check and determine your eligibility before prescribing sublingual ketamine lozenges.
III. Health & Safety Check
Once you have been prescribed Ketamine you will receive the lozenges in the mail and make an appointment to begin the KAP sessions (in-person or virtually). My protocol involves the following:
I. Opening KAP: Preparation Sessions (1 hour) aimed at establishing goals and preparing you for the the psychedelic experience in the Ketamine dosing session.
II. Ketamine Dosing Sessions (2.5 hours) in which you self-administer your prescribed dose of Ketamine. I will be with you every step of the journey and fully present via in-person or virtually.
III. Post Journey Integration Sessions. (1 hour) Every dosing session is followed by at least one integration session where we explore what came up for you, next steps and how to turn your insights into actionable (behavior) change. Integration session can also double as preparation for the following dosing session.
IV. Closing KAP: Maintenance Session. (1 hour) Follow-up medical check-ins with Journey Clinical are done at the 3 and 6 week mark to continue to ensure safety, alter dose and determine if additional dosing sessions are needed.

THE SCIENCE
How Ketamine Works
Ketamine decreases hyper-connectivity in the Default Mode Network (DMN) of the brain. The DMN describes various cortical regions that get activated in passive, non-task oriented states e.g. relaxing, daydreaming etc. Researchers hypothesize that the DMN is the home of the ego, responsible for housing our self concepts and autobiographical thinking.
For example, if you struggle with self worth you might habitually say to yourself, ‘I'm not good enough’ or ‘I'm not worthy/I don’t deserve that.’ Reducing the activity of the DMN is like turning down the volume on your automatic thought patterns. By turning the volume down on mental chatter you can begin to create new stories, more empowering thoughts and beliefs about yourself, others or the world around you.
Ketamine also induces neuroplasticity with the release of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF plays an important role in synaptic health, emotional regulation and memory, and is colloquially referred to at times as ‘fertilizer for the brain’ as it assists in 1) the building of new neural connections and 2) the protection of healthy brain cells.
It’s believed that neuroplasticity can help “re-wire” the brain by disrupting harmful thought structures that contribute to various mental health disorders. Using Ketamine in this context can help you expand self confidence, mental flexibility and provide a reprieve from harmful patterning.
THE CURRENT STATE OF
Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is a form of therapy that involves the use of altered states of consciousness produced by psychedelic substances such as ketamine, LSD, psilocybin, or MDMA, or non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by breath-work, meditation, or other practices.
In combination with therapy, individuals may address a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, PTSD and trauma-related disorders, and addiction. The goal of the therapy is to facilitate whole-self healing by helping individuals access deep-seated emotional material and gain new perspectives on their experiences. This approach has shown promise in clinical trials and is currently being studied in more detail.
Research and clinical trials are ongoing to study the safety and efficacy of psychedelics in treating various mental health. Although the use of psychedelics in therapy is not widely accepted or available due to legal regulations, the laws on psychedelics are rapidly changing and evolving. Currently, ketamine assisted psychotherapy is the only legal option for psychedelic assisted psychotherapy in California.
It is my intention to continue furthering my education, training, and experience to offer additional options for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to clients in California, once these options are legal and demonstrated as effective tools when used in combination with therapy.
Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, known for its use as an anesthetic for medical procedures, but increasingly used in treatment of various mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Over the past decade studies have demonstrated that ketamine assisted psychotherapy may assist populations whose symptoms and psychological issues are treatment-reisistent, or have not been responsive to treatment by other means.
Ketamine is currently the only legal option for use with psychotherapy in California, and is increasingly used for various chronic and treatment-resistant issues like PTSD, depression and anxiety.
MDMA
MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) is a potent empathogen–entactogen. MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) has been conducting clinical trials on the use of MDMA for the treatment PTSD with promising results. The results of these trials have led the FDA to grant ‘Breakthrough Therapy Designation’ for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD.
It’s important to note that while the results are promising, more research and clinical trials are needed before MDMA-assisted therapy can be approved.
In California, MDMA is not yet available for legal, therapeutic use outside of the clinical trials, although this is expected to change in 2024.
Psilocybin
Psilocybin, a psychedelic compound found in ‘magic mushrooms’, has been the subject of a growing number of clinical trials in recent years. In 2020, the FDA granted ‘Breakthrough Therapy’ designation to psilocybin therapy for treatment-resistant depression and end-of-life concerns.
Similarly to MDMA, while the results from these clinical trials are promising, more research is still needed before psilocybin will be approved by the FDA.
In California, psilocybin is not yet available for legal, therapeutic use outside of clinical trials, although other cities and states have decriminalized or legalized possession and/or use.

Questions
-
Ketamine is a safe, legal medication prescribed off-label to treat a variety of mental health diagnoses, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. It has rapidly acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within hours after treatment, and lasting for several weeks after. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors and by stimulating AMPA receptors, which may help form new synaptic connections and boost mood-regulating neural circuits. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.
-
Ketamine’s classification as a psychedelic is largely a semantic and subjective discussion. Clinical, academic, bioethical, and commercial entities largely disagree on the formal definition of “psychedelic.” Ketamine works on different parts of the brain than “classic psychedelics” (psilocybin and LSD). However, those who support ketamine’s classification as a psychedelic cite its neurobiological (physical) and phenomenological (mental characteristics) similarities to classical psychedelics. They also point to the similarity in client outcomes through various psychedelic therapy modalities in clinical research, despite a difference in neurological mechanisms of action. The most notable commonality between all psychedelics, ketamine included, is the promotion of neuroplasticity, which is considered a critical component of their therapeutic effect.

Therapeutic ketamine can feel like floating outside one’s body, pleasantly leaving your physical self behind. Some people gain a heightened sensory awareness; colors may seem brighter. The effects of ketamine, which most patients find relaxing. These dissociative effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subside, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happens during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are clear.
